Frequently Asked Questions
What is the key concept behind the technology of iScan?
The key concept is a patented microwave technology that safely transmits microwaves twice through the material to get instant, consistent and accurate measurement of moisture content. The system can both be used offline (for laboratories) or online (for a flow of material).
What is the difference between the iScan technology and technology offered by NIR (Near Infrared) applications?
Both are non-contact and give instant readings. The iScan measures the bulk of the material because the microwaves travel twice through the sample material. With the NIR technology, the measurement is often taken from the surface of the sample. The iScan can measure density of materials, whereas NIR cannot. The iScan is also unaffected by color variations of the material but those factors affect NIR applications. Furthermore, the iScan is unaffected by variations in the composition of the product, meaning different calibrations are not needed. NIR systems are sensitive to other constituents such as protein and fat – which means calibrations are needed for each recipe. Customers of iScan report that very little maintenance/calibration/repair service is needed; the same calibration can be used even when composition is changing.
Do you measure density? How?
Yes, the iScan measures two parameters; phase shift and microwave attenuation in the sample. The iScan calculates the two unknowns; moisture and density with high precision.
Is there any harm in the microwaves transmitted by the iScan?
No, the radiated power is 3 times less than in mobile phones.
Are there any speed limitation of the flow of material to get a precise reading?
No, the iScan makes 100 measurements per second, so speed of the material flow is irrelevant.
Does iScan have any moving parts that need systematic maintenance?
No, there are no moving parts, which means that the iScan system is more robust and there is less risk of failures.
How do you calibrate the iScan?
The iScan is installed and then calibrated by taking 3-5 samples from production that are analyzed with dry oven method (or alternative reference method). The results of the reference method are then used to create a linear fit with the measurement values.
Do I need to calibrate the iScan if product changes composition or density?
No, one calibration of iScan will be enough to cover variations in composition, recipe and density.
Can I gather data of measurement into a database?
Yes, that is a possibility and can be offered with the iScan as an option. Measurement values can be gathered via Ethernet, which also allows remote control of settings.
What are the electrical requirements of iScan?
The system runs on electricity from mains 110-240VAC or regulated 12VDC.
What is the maintenance schedule of the iScan that you recommend?
Check for measurement accuracy, once every 6 months. This however depends on the measurement accuracy required. Less demands on accuracy means less frequent checks.
